No Longer Little League
By Barbara Carneiro
"I’m Barbara Carneiro, from Word Revolution. I run a team of 10 spread out all over the world, but our head office is now in a two-story building in Annapolis, Maryland.
That’s a long way from when I started the company by myself on Elance back in 2005, grabbing whatever gigs I could find. It was nothing really specialized — just any web project I could get.
After that I started living off of the referrals. The six months’ worth of clients that I got were the ones then referring me to everybody else they knew.
But since the 10K Bootcamp everything’s different. We’ve been able to increase our prices in a way I never would have believed.
What we’ve seen so far is a referral comes in and the first communication that we have with them is, “Hey, we’re doing things differently now. Our prices start at $4,000.”
Bootcamp showed me how to position our company for the big game. Those that can afford us will work with us, and it’s OK to say no to the others. We don’t need to cheapen our services or just accept whatever price they say they can pay. That’s been a real eye-opener for me.
It’s become very easy to say, “Look, we’re doing things differently now.” And that’s helped us, for example, move a retainer with one client from $1,000 to $5,000.
Before, I was stuck in my business. Always chasing that next dollar. And now I’m not. Bootcamp changed my life completely.
I have two kids. Seven and four. This is the time when they need me the most — and all they used to see was the back of my computer. So for me to be able to dedicate time to them now… That’s worth the price of admission, period. There’s nothing that can pay for that. Ever.
I was always busy, always behind with something. Always trying to land the next client, or invoicing someone to get paid today because there was a bill due today.
And now I mentor people in Bootcamp from all over the world, and I tell them, “Look, I’m doing the exact same thing as before. My websites look the same. They’re coded the same. But clients are paying me 10 times more than what they used to pay.”
The only thing stopping people from the same kind of success is their own mindset. I know that because the minute I made the decision to just give it a try and see what happened, I was surprised to see the results.
During Bootcamp I learned that you define yourself by the people you say no to — not the people you say yes to.
That’s been hard for me, but it’s really worked. I’m no longer Little League.
Now I’m in a different game all together."
